Field Trips

As always field trips will be allocated as available and are subject to size limitations and change.

Selection opens 8th July. You will be sent an email to the address provided when registering.

At this stage all filed trips offered in 2021 are able to go ahead in 2022.

Orana Wildlife Park

The ultimate animal adventure! Get up close with New Zealands only gorillas, feed the giraffes, spot the kiwis in the kiwi house, walk the park at your leisure or take a tour through the park on the safari shuttle. Orana Park is set on 80ha only 15 minutes’ drive from Christchurch.

International Antarctic Center

Experience Antarctica from the comfort of Christchurch. Meet the huskies, see the rescue penguins, experience a storm in the snow room and learn about life on Scott Base. A guided tour plus time for own exploration with options for 4D movie and Hagglund ride (extra cost).

Airforce Museum of New Zealand

Experience a behind the scenes tour of the Airforce Museum. This tour includes a short walk, under cover through the Aircraft Hall to the Reserve Collection space the Thérèse Angelo Wing where you will view additional aircrafts, engines and vehicles currently in storage as well as the conservation workshop.  The museum has many planes on display as well as many other historical air force exhibits and an interactive WWII prisoner of war journey exhibit.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

New Zealand’s most comprehensive NZ themed wildlife park, the Willowbank experience tells the story of NZ’s natural heritage. Willowbank is a New Zealand leader in conservation focussing on New Zealand native and endangered species. Feed the eels, walk through the kiwi house, learn about the kiwi breeding programme and see a wide variety of New Zealand’s Native and endangered birds.

Christchurch Gondola with Talk from Dr Sam Hampton - Geologist

Take in the spectacular 360-degree views and see Christchurch from a different perspective: gaze at the snow-capped Southern Alps, sprawling Canterbury Plains and the sparkling waters of Pegasus Bay and the Pacific Ocean.  At the Summit listen to Dr. Sam Hampton (Frontiers Abroad, Department of Geological Sciences, University of Canterbury, and Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū / Banks Peninsula Geopark) talk about the formation of the the Lyttelton Volcanic Complex and the surrounding stages of volcanism of Banks Peninsula.  Views from the top provide opportunities to discuss the formation of the Canterbury Plains, the coastline, and coastal processes.  An optional short walk down to the Summit Road will allow participants the opportunity to examine the evidence of rockfall and view examples of volcanic deposits & processes in road cut exposures.

Pathology Museum

Tour the Denis Stewart Pathology Museum. The Museum is a central resource for undergraduate pathology teaching at the University of Otago, Christchurch.
The Museum comprises of over 1500 soft-tissue pathology specimens, a collection of dried bones and several thousand projection slides featuring gross anatomical pathology.

A visit to Quake City is a must to understand the seismic events that shook Christchurch and Canterbury 10 years ago.
This special exhibition is packed with interesting displays and interactives for all ages. Hear from those who lived through the earthquakes and those who came to help.
Learn about the science behind the quakes and with the help of a hands-on interactive understand the phenomenon of liquefaction.
